Understanding Potency in Homoeopathy

Why remedies are diluted, and why your potency is a decision for your physician

Anyone who looks into homoeopathy quickly runs into an unusual idea: remedies are given in extremely small, highly diluted doses. It's one of the first things critics point to, and one of the first things patients ask about. Here's what ‘potency’ actually means, in plain terms.

What Potency Is

A homoeopathic remedy is made by repeatedly diluting a substance — a plant extract, a mineral, sometimes an animal product — and vigorously shaking it between each dilution, a step called succussion. This combined process of diluting and shaking is called potentization, and the result is referred to as the remedy's ‘potency.’ The more times a substance has been diluted and shaken, the higher its potency is said to be.

This is genuinely counter-intuitive: common sense suggests a more diluted substance should be weaker, not stronger. Homoeopaths hold that it's the succussion — not the dilution alone — that matters, and that this process gives the remedy an effect the raw substance does not have. This is the most debated aspect of homoeopathic theory, and scientific reviews have not found convincing evidence for it, and it's fair for patients to ask their practitioner about it.

Low, Medium and High Potency — In Broad Strokes

Homoeopaths generally think in terms of three broad bands:

Low potencies tend to be used for conditions where there's visible physical or structural damage — for example, in more advanced, longstanding disease, or in older or frailer patients.

Medium potencies are often the starting point in a new case, as a way to test how a patient responds before adjusting up or down.

High potencies tend to be reserved for cases with strong, well-defined symptoms and little structural damage — often where the patient's mental and emotional symptoms are prominent, or where the constitution needs a deeper-acting remedy.

Why Potency Isn't a Do-It-Yourself Decision

Choosing the right potency for a given patient depends on a long list of individual factors — age, general vitality, how the disease has progressed, how sensitive the patient is to remedies, whether there's existing damage to an organ, and more. Two patients with what looks like the ‘same’ condition can need very different potencies. This is exactly the kind of judgment a trained homoeopath makes case by case, which is why we don't publish generic dosing tables — the right potency and dosing schedule for you is something to work out with your physician, not something to self-select from a general description.

If you're currently taking a homoeopathic remedy and have questions about your potency or dosing, please raise it directly with your treating physician rather than adjusting it yourself.
